The paradox found by Viswanathan is that though women contribute mightily to the family businesses named as being administered and run by the men of the family, many of the businesses listed as woman-owned "(that is, enterprises in which women hold the controlling share)" (Viswanathan 27; Women in Action 33), are in fact woman-owned in name only while being administered by men. Viswanathan says that the importance of her study is that programs ostensibly targeted for woman-owned businesses are in fact missing many of their intended marks. Nonetheless, women entrepreneurs are managing to find their way, and actually are able to find it quite nicely. It there is no time or no drivenness to go through that glass ceiling that has dropped in only a select few industries, these women simply go around it. Why Women Go into Business Well, why do men go into business? All the standard reasons apply, regardless of the gender of the entrepreneur: a specific goal; a specific purpose; a desire to conduct business according to personal values rather than according to company policy; a desire to build a business from the bottom up; a personal and specific family situation unworkable under the terms of corporate America. Some people-men and women alike-simply want to be working for themselves and their families rather than for someone else.
