Discussion Oddly, enough, according to one source, "[W]hen Muslims seek to identify their natural allies in affirming divine values in the modern world, it is often sincere, believing Christians who come to the fore" (Michel, 2003). This "natural affinity" that should exist between Christians and Muslims goes back "to the very Scriptural origins of Islam, where the Quran states: "The closest in affection to [Muslims] are those who say: We are Christians, for among them are priests and monks and they are not arrogant" (Quran 5: 82) (Michel, 2003). The idea of this cooperation was expressed in the Second Vatican Council, which urged members of both faiths "to move beyond the suspicions and conflicts of the past in order to work together to carry out a common mandate: working together to "preserve and promote peace, liberty, social justice and moral values" (Michel, 2003). This, however, is not the case in many parts of the world, including the Philippines. In the Philippines, "the whole issue of Christian-Muslim relations has a special character. The Philippines is the only country in Asia where the Christian population is in the majority and where the Muslim minority has been struggling for its rights for many years" (Islam in Asia, 1991). The history of Spanish colonialism in the islands has led to a great distrust of Christians by Muslims; in order to overcome this problem, "certain members of both groups are reviewing this history" (Islam in Asia, 1991). This has led to a "growing realization that both groups are victims of some of the same problems" (Islam in Asia, 1991).
