creation myth one must perhaps understand that China has, and had, many different cultures and religious beliefs throughout time. And, even in the Native American culture of the Navajo, a more specific culture, there are at least two versions of the creation story. The following paper examines the general creation myth of the Chinese and the Navajo. The paper examines them individually and then compares and contrasts the two. Chinese Creation Myth One particular myth of creation as it involves China illustrates how light and warmth came to be, coming into existence from ten suns. "The suns were the ten children of Di Jun, the god of the eastern sky. Each morning one of the suns would rise, climb into a chariot pulled by a dragon, and ride across the sky bringing light to the different parts of the world" (A Creation Story from China). It was because of these actions that the earth received a sufficient amount of sunshine and warmth, also providing the earth with seasons (A Creation Story from China). These suns, however, became bored and so one day they all got together and got in their chariots and traveled across the sky together (A Creation Story from China). This was too much for the earth and it burned and cracked (A Creation Story from China). The rivers became dry and the people and animals all grew weak because of the hot environment (A Creation Story from China). The father of the ten suns grew angry at their behavior and sent an archer to shoot nine of the ten suns (A Creation Story from China).
