Chinese Clothing in General Chinese civilization goes back thousands of years; it is an ancient country that has seen a great deal of turmoil. Throughout its history, various dynasties have arisen; only to fall again as other dynasties took their place. And throughout all that time "generations of clothing designers have devoted themselves to building the Kingdom of Clothes, making the garments that cover the human body into an important component of Chinese culture" (Yugen). We know that clothing has been manufactured in China since prehistoric times, because "bone needles [were] unearthed from the ruins at Hemudu in Zhejiang Province" and dated to 7,000 years ago. (Yugen). Unfortunately, its not possible to provide information on every one of the dynasties, but we can trace some of the developments in clothing over the years. Chinese Dynasties The Chinese dynasties start with the Xia Dynasty (2205-1766 BC) though there was a Chinese civilization before that; it dates back to 4000 BC, and may actually be much older (McGill 51). 4000-2205 BC is considered the Neolithic period; it was followed by the Bronze Age (2205-256 BC) (McGill 51). Then comes the Xia Dynasty. Long thought to be legendary, it has recently proven to actually have existed, but theres no information on the type of clothing worn then (McGill 51). The Shang Dynasty (1766-1050 BC) overthrows the Xia, but proves corrupt and is in turn overthrown by the Chou or Zhou Dynasty (1050 - 256 BC) (McGill 51).
