is generally associated with the banning of certain artistic and cultural materials, usually on the grounds that this is in the public good or promotes moral values, it would be simplistic to assert that all censorship does is distinguish between what is acceptable and what is not, and remove the latter from the public view. Censorship is a complex issue, and one which is rooted in the fundamental beliefs and attitudes of a particular social culture: by definition, it also creates a moral hierarchy within that culture, since some individuals are deemed to have the right to view all artistic material and then dictate what is suitable for public viewing. The assumption is that such individuals have sufficient moral integrity to remain unaffected by material which is considered to have the potential to corrupt others: an assumption which has, throughout history, proved not to be the case. Gabb (2003) also makes the point that arguing for the banning of certain material on the grounds that it inspires immorality and violence would mean banning literature as far back as the ancient Greeks. Censorship of any form also has the effect of promoting elitism with regard to access to any body of knowledge - if the public are not allowed to view certain materials, they are unable to make any informed judgement on them, and must rely instead on the opinions of others, whose judgement is based on their own social, political or religious agendas.
