With setting in the 1970s, the story was first published in 1981, the short story can be argued as reflecting the times of economic hardship, where despite a general historical rise in living conditions United States was going through a period of high inflation and high interest rates coupled with high unemployment resulted in a recession and an increasing gap between the wealthy and the poor. Cycles of poverty and hard ship were difficult to break resulting in a harsh environment where characters can easily be alienated. However, when looking at the setting in its totality cover cannot be seen as creating a totally godless place within the sparsely urban landscape, there is hardship, disappointment and expectations, but at the same time there are some glimmers of hope. Unlike many authors who set stories in similar conditions Carver incorporates a redeeming aspects of life; love and friendship possible, although there may be tempered by the realities of the real world interfering, and trust is possible. Therefore, harsh realities may be a central theme of Carvers work in general, and particularly in the story Cathedral, but there are glimmers of hope and light in parts of the story which are more poignant due to their downtrodden setting. The approach of the characters is generally reacted to events which are around them, especially the narrator, indicating a low level of confidence in their ability to influence the events within their own life and acceptance of whatever it is that state, or the world in general, is going to throw at them. However, even in this there are glimpses of optimism through the difficult storyline; some characters, such as the wife, are able to find ways to temporary escape to help determine their own life course.
