Discussion One of the reasons Candide is so susceptible to believing what hes told is that his (false) teacher and friend, Dr. Pangloss, has drilled it into him that "This is the best of all possible worlds." This is Panglosss philosophy and he passes it on to his pupil. Candide, for his part, loves Pangloss very much and believes what the older man tells him. Pangloss has been Candides teacher for years, and despite the fact they end up in all kinds of situations that demonstrate conclusively that this is anything but the best of all possible worlds, Candide retains that belief. In short, Pangloss is able to victimize Candide because Candide trusts him, but also because Pangloss himself believes what hes saying, thus making it easy for him to convince others. Tartuffe victimizes Orgon, it seems, because of Orgons strong religious faith. He appears to be a very decent man but he also appears to be something of a proselytizer, constantly preaching to others about their behavior. In Act I, Scene VI, Cl?ante and Orgon are talking; Orgon opens the scene by giving Cl?ante (his brother) a virtual laundry list of Tartuffes virtues. Orgon tells Cl?ante that when he first saw Tartuffe, they were in church: "He came to church each day, with contrite mien, / Kneeled, on both knees, right opposite my place, / And drew the eyes of all the congregation, / To watch the fervour of his prayers to heaven; / With deep-drawn sighs and great ejaculations, / He humbly kissed the earth at every moment" (Moliere, 2005).
