disasters. It will be a long time before anyone in the world is able to erase the memories of tens of thousands of people in New Orleans suffering without water, food or medical help. People died and they should not have. What is needed is more agencies that can respond quickly in natural or other disasters when medical help is critical. It seems only the military is prepared to respond quickly and they do so whenever called. What is needed is non-military agencies who can respond with mobile medical help quickly and efficiently, thereby saving lives that would otherwise be lost. The National Mobile Medical Emergency System will be one such organization. This organization will be comprised of professional health care professionals who have participated in rigorous training for responding quickly. The goal is to respond within 24 hours of any such disaster with this organization sending in medical teams to assist local professionals who are always overwhelmed with the need. The initial budget is estimated at $1.6 million. The organization will apply for various grants through diverse governmental agencies. Since there is such a focus on emergency preparedness right now, the chances are excellent that such grants will be obtained. The risks are minimal. Disaster events are increasing and the need for emergency medical help is growing. Since health care professionals will be volunteers, there is no need for large paid staffs. In fact, the only paid staff members will be the director, the training coordinator, the dispatch responder and clerical staff.
