Confidence, Kaplan lays out a detailed and comprehensive plan that demonstrates how an individual can get control over not only their business life, but their personal and social life as well. In essence, this book allows the ordinary citizen to access the expertise that business officials have paid thousands of dollars to obtain. Kaplans overall philosophy is morally sound and provides the underlying theme of his book. His methods basically show how to become a more influential person through treating others from a standpoint of kindness and respect. Kaplan argues that? essentially?the reader must "untrain" himself or herself from failure while being instructed on the keys to success through the medium of his book. Over his two-week course plan, Kaplan delineates four major reasons for failure in business and life?arrogance, political game-playing, aggression and unmanaged anger. These causes run as a central theme throughout the book and provide an underlying unity as to Kaplans goals and objectives. In each chapter, Kaplan identifies situations and circumstances in which these factors tend to surface. He then gives pragmatic tips and advice for identifying these factors in each situation. His advice is sound in each instance; and , if it doesnt actually solve the problem, it definitely ameliorates the offending factor. The scope of his book is quite broad. Kaplan addresses such common topics as the importance of teamwork, listening to employees and colleagues, and ways to deal with difficult people. He also addresses how body language can be a key to identifying attitudes. His advice on how to maneuver into a "win-win" situation within the business world is particularly informative and helpful.
