This paper discusses this mercenary organization, and argues that its criminal activities should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Discussion What is Blackwater? Simply put, Blackwater is a private "security" company (i.e., mercenaries) that supplies hired guns to the U.S. government. It was founded in 1997 by a former Navy SEAL named Erik Prince. Prince is described as a "radical right-wing mega-millionaire who has served as a bankroller not only of President Bushs campaigns but of the broader Christian right agenda" (Scahill, 2007). In his book Blackwater: The Rise of the Worlds Most Powerful Mercenary Army, Scahill reveals that Blackwater has more than 2,300 soldiers deployed in various countries around the world, as well as in the U.S. in places like New Orleans (Scahill, 2007).
