Early childhood education necessitates a variety of considerations if learning is to be optimized. Discipline is one of those considerations. Unfortunately, our schools have transitioned from the orderly environment of yesteryear to one which can be disruptive if not all out dangerous. This is not just true in our high schools and our middle schools, it is true as well in our elementary schools. For a variety of societal reasons students simply dont have the respect and discipline that was characteristic of the schools in the earlier years of our history. It becomes the job of the school, both its administrators and its teachers, to reclaim the classroom environment from one of chaos to one of education. The intricacies of addressing disciplinary problems in early childhood education have been explored quite extensively in the literature. One of the more informative of these explorations is that completed by Laurel M Garrick Duhaney. Duhaneys findings are published in the May 1, 2003 edition of "Intervention in School & Clinic". Duhaneys (2003) main thesis is that the educator is faced with a variety of problems in regard to proper student behavior in the educational setting and that to address these problems we must utilized a number of behavioral management techniques. While it is seldom in our elementary schools that disorder progresses to outright violence, there are many other types of disciplinary problems which serve as a disruption to classroom learning. Duhaney (2003) reviews several behavioral management techniques that can be utilized for ADD students. These include both positive reinforcement techniques and interventionary techniques.
