industry. Streisands career has evolved over the years although evidence of her artistic ability was evident in her very first Broadway show. Upon graduation from high school, Streisand became a club singer, and then went on to record an album for Columbia Records in 1962 (Barbara Streisand, 2004). It was soon after that she appeared in the Broadway musical, I Can Get It For You Wholesale (Barbara Streisand, 2004). This is the story of a woman whose dream it is to design dresses for "regular" women. But her personal ethics are challenged when she has the chance to sell her designs to a much larger firm. Her partners disagree with this decision, but she wants fame so desperately that she makes the designer dresses for the big chain on the sly. When her partners find out, they are shocked. Barbara Streisand stunned audiences with her portrayal of Miss Marmelstein. This was her Broadway debut role and even though her character was much older than Streisand actually was, her voice literally stole the show. I Can Get It For You Wholesale was an immediate hit, and Streisand would go on to star in a host of notable roles. This was an important show from a political and social standpoint as well. This story reflects many of the values that were coming into conflict in the turbulent era of the 1960s. This was a time when there was a definite push-pull relationship between capitalism and an exploration of trying to stay more grounded.
