is the case with other endangered animals, there are many reasons why the bald eagle is on the endangered species list. The following paper examines why the Bald Eagle is on the endangered species list. Bald Eagles Before WWII the bald eagle was not an endangered species and it apparently experienced a good rate of growth and did not suffer unduly by mans interaction with nature. However, "Bald eagles became a threatened/endangered species after World War II because of the increase in use of pesticides and pollution" (Shrub-Steppe Series: What About Bald Eagles, 2005). In addition there was also the condition wherein, following WWII, people began to seriously encroach on the bald eagles territory building houses and suburbs. The forests in many areas were essentially destroyed for lumber as well as construction. There was also a time period in which people just shot the eagles for sport, to keep them away from their land, or to sell parts from the animals. One of the biggest threats to the bald eagle was pesticides, namely the infamous DDT: "In the 1950s and 60s, many farmers used a harmful chemical called DDT. They used it because it worked well to kill insects. They didnt know then that it would also eventually kill eagles and other birds. Eagles with DDT in their bodies laid eggs with thin shells. The thin eggs were crushed when the parents sat on them. Few baby eagles were born" (WebRangers, 2005). For the most part today we see that they are not on the federally endangered list anymore, but in some states they are still seriously threatened.
