Augustus, Rome was already the most powerful and affluent region in the Mediterranean region, it was during Augustuss time that it evolved into a genuinely imperial city and this is
reflected in the art and architecture of the period. The emperor instigated a social and cultural programme which incorporated literature and the arts in order to show that Rome had
divine authority for her domination of the world, to reiterate ancient values and customs, and to encourage allegiance to Augustus and the Augustan dynasty.
The role of the emperor included the duties of the chief
priest, and therefore many of the images of Augustus showed him as officiating at religious ceremonies. There was a revival of religious belief systems in general, and temples were restored
and public ceremonial rituals reinstated. There was also considerable progress in engineering and architecture, which contributed to the many improvements to the city during the Augustan period: it came to
boast public buildings, monuments, and amenities far superior to any in the remainder of the empire (Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2002).
There were numerous monuments and statues constructed during the reign of
