The following examination of this text offers an overview of the topics covered in Atkinsons informative text. Part 1 Racial/Ethnic Minorities and Cross Cultural Counseling This opening section of the book makes a persuasive case for formulating methodologies and practices for mental health services that are cognizant of the differences between minority cultures and that of mainstream society. In this manner, the author argues that mental health services can be designed that are capable of meeting the special needs of specific ethnic and racial minorities. Chapter 1. Defining Populations and Terms This chapter, first of all, offers definitions that address terms such as "race, ethnicity, and culture" (Atkinson 5). These definitions also serve to introduce intriguing and controversial ideas, such as whether or not "race" is a valid concept. In connection with this definition/discussion, the author offers criticism of the biological definition of race, and also the social definition of race, prior to addressing issues that concern ethnicity and culture, which address these terms in a similar manner.
