1. Planning. Planning is critical to the success of any organization. It includes establishing a vision and mission for the organization as well as the goals and objectives. It is about what the company is going to do and how. Decision-making is a key activity in the process of planning (Allen and Gilmore, 2007). As Olum (2004) points out, a plan of action does not exist until a decision has been made to make a commitment to it. 2. Organizing. When involved in organizing, the manager is making the necessary preparations for implementing the plans that have been made. This function includes deciding who is going to what, the hierarchy of the organization, i.e., who will be reporting to whom, who will be in charge of organizing certain departments or divisions or ongoing projects (Allen and Gilmore, 2007). Another way to explain organizing is to say that it is establishing an organizational structure and "the purpose of an organizational structure is to help in creating an environment for human performance" (Olum, 2004). In other words the resources of the company are coordinated and organized to allow the company to progress and succeed (Allen and Gilmore, 2007). 3. Staffing. This is obviously another essential and universal function because the organization needs to have the right people doing the right jobs. This involves recruiting, hiring, training, employee development, i.e., training, and monitoring performance. The company will only succeed if it has highly-skilled and knowledgeable employees who are encouraged to exceed their own self-perceived potential (Allen and Gilmore, 2007). This leads to another part of the staffing function, which is to retain talented employees, which incorporates having an appropriate and attractive compensation plan with incentives for higher performance (Olum, 2004).
