Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction Conspicuous consumption is, according to one Edwin Jonestown, the stabilizing factor in American life; that and technology in all its glory, which has no faults whatever. This paper is a response to Jonestowns article about Aldous Huxleys book Brave New World. Discussion The first question that any reader has to ask is this: Is Jonestown serious? His article reads like Jonathan Swifts classic satire of the Irish famine, in which he advised the Irish to kill their babies and eat them, thereby solving both the famine and the overpopulation problem at the same time. If Jonestown is writing a satire, hes very successful; if hes serious, then he has a firm grasp on unreality as well as a penchant for making sweeping generalizations. Lets examine just a few of his more outrageous statements. Heres a lulu: "First of all, Huxley wrongly believes that because we can control human reproduction, people will want to have total control over it. This is a mistaken notion. People will only want a partial control over reproduction" (Jonestown). What is the abortion fight about unless its because women are demanding total control over their own bodies and their reproductive capacity? And why would anyone want only partial control over reproduction; that makes no sense. Both pro-choice and pro-life people can probably agree that no one really wants abortion; what both sides want is to insure that every child is wanted, and that every mother is physically healthy, and emotionally and intellectually stable before she becomes a mother. ...
