since art cannot exist without a cultural substructure. Within the general category "art", however, there are various subgroups which reflect different aspects of the underlying culture: one often finds a
strict division between "high" and "low" culture which is exemplified in different kinds of artwork.
If one looks, for instance, at fin-de-siecle France, it is evident that the kind of art which had always been regarded as legitimate was that of the upper classes, the
elite art of the salons. It kept to strict parameters of form, structure and content and was for the most part restricted to a small sector of society, rather than
being widely available to the public as a whole. With advances in the technology of printing and the growth of graphic art as a reflection of non-elite culture, the poster
art of Toulouse Lautrec and his contemporaries brought art out of the salons and into the street. It was a kind of art which was vibrant, immediate, and to a
great extent disposable - the advertising posters for which Lautrec was famous were not intended to have the same durability as salon paintings, and their variety and transitory nature emphasised
the diversity and liveliness of the culture of the time. One could
assert, therefore, that art cannot help but have meaning, since it takes meaning from the underlying cultural paradigm and records and transmits it to the audience. Whether or not an
artist needs to be trained is a slightly different issue. One could argue that anyone who has the ability to draw on their cultural background and translate its salient features
