against commercial airplanes being used as terrorist weapons. National polls showed that the majority of Americans considered this to be a good idea. The House of Representatives agreed, the Senate
agreed, and while the Bush administration originally opposed to the idea, the White House agreed that President Bush would sign a bill into that allows armed airline pilots (Up in
arms, 2002). However, not everyone agrees. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which has the responsibility of establishing the criteria that pilots must meet before they can fly armed, does not
agree, and has made the law practically impossible to implement. Why? This investigation will look at both sides of this debate in an effort to clarify this issue. In
September of 2002, the Senate, voting 87 to 6, passed a bill that permits pilot bring guns on board the planes they fly, after undergoing training in the use of
firearms (Up in arms, 2002). Likewise, the House had already passed a similar bill by a large majority, 310 to 113 (Up in arms, 2002). Stephen Luckey, a former pilot
who spoke before congressional committees, stated the position of supports for this issue and said, "All sides of the political spectrum recognize that pilots need to be able to defend
the cockpit with lethal force" (Up in arms, 2002, p. 3). There is a great deal of evidence to support Luckeys assessment, as liberal politicians who are normally in favor
of gun control, such as California Senator Barbara Boxer, have come out in favor of allowing airline pilots to carry guns, if they so wish (Sowell, 2002). Representative
Duke Cunningham (R.-Cali.), who was a decorated fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, voted for the bill (House easily, 2002). He explained his reasons by saying that he hoped that
