Similarly, mythology expert Joseph Campbell identifies archetypes as a means that human beings use to find meaning and understanding of in the complex world of reality. In the Greek harvest story of Demeter and Persephone, one finds not only a rationale for the changing of the seasons, but an archetypal narrative that encompasses the whole drama of life, death and renewed life. The image and story of Demeter speaks to this writer on an archetypal level. Persephone was the beautiful daughter of Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain and harvest. Unknown to Demeter, Persephone had been promised as wife to Hades, the god of the underworld by Zeus. While she was away from her mother, the earth opened up and Hades appears with this chariot. He snatched Persephone away from the living world and took her to his dark kingdom. Demeter was inconsolable. Rather than attend to the growing cycle, she disconsolately traveled the earth, searching for her daughter. While Demeter grieved, nothing grew. Finally, Zeus stepped in and determined that Persephone should be returned. Otherwise, mortal life would perish. However, because Persephone had eaten several seeds while in the world of the dead, it was mandated that she should be returned to Hades for three months of the year. While Persephone is in the underworld, the natural world dies and experiences winter. When Persephone is returned the world experiences new life, as the growing cycle is resumed. Demeter is pictured in Greek myth as a mature, buxom woman. From an archetypal standpoint, she is the Great Mother.
