vision of the future that was inspired by that of the Soviet Union," which equated being "modern" with being "urban, industrial and with production socialized" (Saich, 2001, p. 11). In other words, prior to the communist takeover, Chinas society was characterized by social and economic factors that were much more similar to feudalism than to the world of the twentieth century. The Soviet Union had accomplished extremely rapid industrialization since its revolution in 1917 and had become a world power. Therefore, the template was very attractive to many Chinese as it seemed like a path toward industrialization that was not only fast, but was also one that had proven (or it seemed to the world) highly successful for Russian Communists. How is this appeal apparent in the characters of the Wild Swans? The author relates the biographies of three generations of women, beginning with her grandmother, who was born when China was still a completely feudal society. She also relates how her mother became a guerilla fighter against the military regime of Chiang Kai-shek. In presenting her mothers story, Chang presents her mothers personal narrative against the backdrop of World War II history and the occupation of Manchuria by the Japanese. This chapter of Changs book is provocatively entitled "Slaves Who Have No Country of Your Own-Ruled by Different Masters (1945-1947)" (Chang, 1991, p. 75). This title conveys the attitude of the Japanese during World War II and Chang relates how the Chinese people suffered under their oppression. After the defeat of Japan, the Japanese in Manchuria were sought out by the local people and most of them were brutalized and murdered.
