Cheek Moon 12 May 2003 paper properly! Revia is produced by Dupont Pharmaceuticals. Generically known as Naltrexone, Revia is used to treat drug (alcohol included) addictions (Drugstore.com, 2003a). It is effective in this function in that it is an opioid receptor antagonist (Drugstore.com, 2003a). An unfortunate side effect of Revia is the potential for the drug to cause liver problems (Drugstore.com, 2003a). Consequently patients who have existing liver problems are not good candidates for Revia (Drugstore.com, 2003a). This most often occurs, however, when dosages are too high (Drugstore.com, 2003a). Symptoms of this complication include abdominal and stomach pain, the development of a yellowish color to the eyes or skin, and dark urine (Drugstore.com, 2003a). A less serious complication of Revia is an upset stomach (Drugstore.com, 2003a). Fortunately this complication can be prevented in most cases by eating when taking the medicine (Drugstore.com, 2003a). Other side effects include nausea, dizziness, decreased appetite, irregular bowel movements, headache, pain in the joints and muscles, altered sleep habits, nervousness and an increased tendency for depression (Drugstore.com, 2003a). Most of these symptoms are alleviated as treatment progresses, however (Drugstore.com, 2003a). Antabuse is another drug commonly employed to overcome excessive alcohol use (Drugstore.com, 2003b).
