dissent against the male leaders of the Massachusetts commonwealth. Debate has varied as to precisely why Hutchinson was found guilty and banished from the colony. Some historians have proposed religious differences as the primary reason, while others have favored a feminist interpretation, which perceives the elements of gender discrimination in Hutchinsons treatment. Examination of the transcript of Hutchinsons trial supports the feminist interpretation. As Wheeler and Becker (2007) point out, Hutchinsons trial occurred against a backdrop of a theological controversy referred to as antinomianism. In order to fulfill their perceived destiny as a "city upon a hill," that is, an example to the world of the ideal Christian community, Puritan leaders considered group cohesion and absolute compliance with the established social hierarchy to be absolutely essential (Wheeler and Becker, 2007, p. 30). A factor in this social hierarchy was the absolute acceptance of patriarchy, i.e., that men should be dominant over women and should always be the leaders in the church, particularly in regards to matters of dogma and theology. Examination of the transcript of Hutchinsons trial demonstrates that her gender and her potential influence on the rest of the women in the colony were very much on Governor Winthrops mind. In the opening statements given by Winthrop, he refers t the bible study meetings that Hutchinson has been conducting in her home to be a "thing not tolerable nor comely in the sight of God nor fitting for your sex" (Transcript [Winthrop], 2007, p. 35). As this indicates, Hutchinsons gender is identified as a major issue. Her accusers, principally Winthrop, badger Hutchinson, attempting to elicit a confession that she disagrees with the Puritan dogma as stated by the colonys leadership.
