evolved considerably since the days of our grandparents. Indeed, a number of technological innovations have made their way into the heart of farming in the last few decades. These include everything from the use of genetically engineered plants, to the control of pests and disease, to the use of plants and animals as bioreactors in molecular farming. Specific areas of farming now entail a number of technological considerations which were only a figment of science fiction just a few years ago. Many of these innovations have resulted in the ever increasing pressure to feed the worlds masses and to provide certain products which are of pharmaceutical or industrial use. One of the more promising of these innovations is hydroponics. The methodology known as hydroponics is used both directly in the production of food and other important plant products and indirectly in plant research conducted to improve yields through superior disease resistance, environmental parameter tolerance and the like. In its simplest definition hydroponics is the production of plants in the absence of their normal growth medium, soil. In natural growth scenarios soil typically provides both nutrients and support for plants. In the hydroponic environment nutrients (particularly Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron and Copper which are critical to plant growth) are delivered in an aqueous solution and the plant is supported with a variety of provisions ranging from plastic tubes to non-organic medium. Hydroponics allows the careful tweaking of nutrient and soil levels and provides a steady source of water to the plant.
