Civil engineers are able to show their vocational prowess through the implementation of what has been learned. Yet, civil engineering has come a long way in a short time. Civil engineers who are nearing retirement have seen the field go through a myriad of changes, particularly in the past decade or so. One of those important changes is in respect to the use of computers. Computerization in fact has affected many fields and it has certainly revolutionized the engineering fields. First, before noticing the immense changes and accomplishments of civil engineering, it helps to define the niche. Civil engineering is an important type of engineering, but its definition is sometimes illusive. In answer to the question, What is Civil Engineering, CE members define it as follows: "... a great art, on which the wealth and well-being of the whole of society depends. Its essential feature, as distinct from science and the arts, is the exercise of imagination to fashion the products, processes and people needed to create a sustainable physical and natural built environment. It requires a broad understanding of scientific principles, knowledge of materials and the art of analysis and synthesis. It also requires research, team working, leadership and business skills" ("What is Civil Engineering," 2005).
