it comes from Cuba. It is not that anything is wrong with Cuban cigars. In fact, many contend that they are quite good. The problem is that the embargo that had been set up against Cuba rendered the sought after Cuban cigar highly illegal. When one smokes one of those in the United States, there is a feeling of criminality, similar to the aura one is surrounded by when smoking pot. What is obvious is that Cuban cigars are illegal, but what is not so obvious--particularly to younger Americans--is why. The story behind the illegality of the Cuban cigar is not simple. It is part of a intricate web of political maneuvering, a cold war ideology and hard feelings between government leaders. The reason why the cigar made in Havana is illegal has to do with the United Statess embargo against Cuba. Before outlining the history of the embargo, the history of the nation should be understood in the context of its complex relationship with the United States. Only after the many facets of the relationship between Cuba and the United States are explored can one understand why that embargo should be lifted. It is also important to explore the issue of Cuban immigration. Along with the complex political history that Cuba shares with the United States, many wonder why Cubans are flocking to Florida. The answer to that question may prove enlightening to the discussion. The thesis of this paper is that the embargo should be lifted not just to help the people of Cuba, but to level United States foreign policy so that Cuba is not used as a scapegoat.
