investigate the allegations and explained that the research had nothing to do with the companys current products ("Lucent-Research Review," 2005). Rather, questionable issues surrounded the areas of "superconductivity, molecular crystals and molecular electronics" ("Lucent-Research Review," 2005). Still, as far as the general public was concerned, Lucent was in hot water once again. The company had some problems since its inception. With this new incident, Lucent would have to deal with a great deal of bad publicity. Lucent did conclude its investigation in 2002 and in a press release, made the following statement: "In its report, the committee concludes that one member of these teams had engaged in scientific misconduct by falsifying and fabricating experimental data between 1998 and 2001. This scientists employment with Lucent Technologies has been terminated. The committee cleared all the other researchers who had contributed to the experiments, and who were co-authors on several published papers, of any scientific misconduct" ("Bell Labs Announces," 2002). Lucent, to some extent, came out okay, but the physics profession was perhaps hurt more than was the company that hired this one rogue scientist. Still, it is important to look at Lucent. Is this incident one in a pattern of many disastrous things to occur within the company? Was Lucents investigation sound?
