Discussion This paper is based on the film Batman Begins, not the comic strip. One source notes that the earlier Batman films have glossed over the period of his life between the murder of his parents and the appearance of the Batman persona; but here, director Christopher Nolan fills in the gap. In this version, the murder of the parents is the same, but the film then shows us a young man who wants vengeance (Batman begins, 2005). Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) returns from Princeton to attend the parole hearing of his parents killer; to his dismay and fury, the shooter is paroled (Batman begins, 2005). Wayne plans to kill the man himself, only to have the mob beat him to it (Batman begins, 2005). When the Assistant District Attorney Rachel Dawes, a life-long friend of Waynes, learns of his plans to murder the killer, she explains the difference between justice and vengeance, and reminds him his father would not have wanted him to avenge his death in this way (Batman begins, 2005). Ashamed, Wayne leaves the country and wanders the world, trying to find a way to fight injustice (Batman begins, 2005). Wayne is accused of theft, and while jailed in China, is approached by Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson); Ducard is the representative of Ras al Ghul (Ken Watanabe); al Ghul is a member of the League of Shadows, "a group of fanatical assassins" (Batman begins, 2005).
