is also a story wherein Wilde has obviously poked a great deal of fun at the society that simply exists for the pursuit of frivolous joys, the economically wealthy focusing only on their shallow materialistic existence. The following paper examines this sort of existence as it involves the character of Algernon. The paper analyzes his character as it involves the theme of dandyism. Algernon In first analyzing the character of Algernon as a dandy it is perhaps imperative to first outline or define what a dandy is, and what dandyism is. For the most part the dandy was a figure, a male figure, of the past. In most respects, although dandies exist today, they were a product of the Victorian era. One author notes, in defining something about the dandy, ""Like bohemians, Dandies fervently rejected bourgeois values" (The Dandy). They lived a life that was essentially as carefree as the bohemian, and clearly just as self absorbed as the bohemian, but they lived their lives emulating "aristocracy rather than" living a life of "poverty" which essentially characterized the bohemian (The Dandy). Another author notes that, "Independence is perhaps the most salient characteristic of dandies, yet historically theyve always sought out the company of their fellows" (Dandyism). The dandy was a man who may well have lived off of others, being a freeloader, an individual intrigued by the arts and by living out fantasies of a sort (The Dandy). They were also individuals who held themselves in very high regard in many respects as they lived a life of classy elegance.
