Many believe that social ills such as discrimination are a thing of the past. The fact is that injustices such as age discrimination are a very real problem, especially in information technology fields such as network administration, where youth is valued much more highly than experience. Luckily, such ills can be overcome with the proper training and the abolishment of certain misconceptions that cause employers to favor the younger job candidate. This paragraph helps the student provide an overview of age diversity in network administration. Due to age discrimination, many older, more experienced information technology professionals are finding it harder and harder to find gainful employment ("Are", 2002). Third Age Foundation conducted a survey focusing on age discrimination in the IT field, centered on those professionals at the age of 40 or higher, and the results are rather surprising: it would seem that employers favored job candidates below the 40 year old mark, regardless of other factors such as skills or training ("Are", 2002). There is a misconception when it comes to the IT field that the older the employee is, the less likely they are to be up to date with all the current cutting-edge technologies and network systems. Clearly, such assumptions made by employers regarding an older candidates ability are oftentimes wrongly held, as older candidates have the benefits of experience.
