Affirmative action is one of the most controversial topics of contemporary society. Edley (1996) defines Affirmative Action as any measures to provide an expanded range of opportunities for women and minorities: "by using membership in those groups that have been subject to discrimination as a consideration [in decision making or allocation of resources]". The intent of affirmative action, of course, is to level the playing field between minorities, women, and the white males that typically dominate the upper echelon of the workplace. Under historic scenarios women and minorities find it difficult to advance in certain industries due to the internal prejudices and all-out hostility which they all too often encounter (Maume, 1999). To make these allowances we have set up a number of systems which recognize individuals on qualities other than their qualifications. People are hired and promoted based on their race or gender rather than on their experience and qualifications. People are admitted to schools based on these same factors. The result of affirmative action has indeed been a reproportioning of the racial and gender makeup of a number of societal organizations. Some would contend that this outcome justifies the fact that another result has been the penalization of those that might have been more deserving! Should affirmative action not be eliminated? The answer, as controversial as it might be in this time of political correctness, is a resounding no! ...
