This course has helped prepare me to understand how the fine line between acting within the law and behaving outside of it has become an unfortunate focal point of myriad police departments, inasmuch as deviance on the force is an ever-present problem that blurs the distinction of law enforcer and criminal. "Police misconduct is impropriety of office, not misuse of authority. Its wrongdoing, the appearance of wrongdoing, or puzzling behavior that violates standards usually set down in departmental policies and procedures, for good reasons, that the employee may or may not be cognizant of. Misconduct is bad because it leaves the public free to speculate and draw sweeping generalizations about the profession of policing as a whole" (OConnor, 2005). There are a number of ways law enforcement officials can sidestep their ethical responsibilities and slip into deviant behavior, not the least of which includes corruption, perjury, brutality, sexual misconduct, drug/alcohol abuse, breach of confidentiality, preferential treatment and goldbricking - "the avoidance of work or performing only the amount minimally necessary to satisfy superiors" (OConnor, 2005). Law enforcement exists in order to provide community protection and ameliorate situations that prove to threaten social accord. When the very individuals who are supposed to uphold this duty are the ones perpetuating the problem, the fine line that already exists between criminality and lawfulness becomes blurred to such an extent that there ends up being little difference between the two sides. Indeed, police are bound by a code of ethics that helps maintain a sense of equity and morality; when that code is breached and officers act as though they are above the law, the fundamental essence of civil safety stands in great peril.
