In order to develop a better understanding of abortion and its implications, it must be analyzed in terms of defining relevant concepts, and discussing pertinent issues, arguments, and attitudes. As a healthcare professional, evaluating abortion from a critical standpoint, both past and present, can go a long way toward gaining a complete and long-term perspective of the subject and alternatives in effectively dealing with it medically and ethically. Abortion is officially defined as "induced termination of a pregnancy usually before the fetus has developed enough to live if born, deemed necessary by the woman carrying it and performed at her request" (Huntington, 2002, p. 273). According to statistics published in 2002, the United States leads Canada, Europe, and Canada as far as abortion percentages, with more than 88 percent of them being performed within the first three months (Millner and Hanks, p. 57). In terms of time, adolescents are more likely to terminate pregnancies in their later stages than are women over the age of 19 (Millner and Hanks, 2002, p. 57). Historically, abortions were categorized as being either therapeutic (legal) or criminal (Aries, 2003). Therapeutic abortions were only cases in which the womans life was at risk if the pregnancy was carried full term, and criminal abortions described "all other uses of the procedure" (Aries, 2003, p. 1810). An important turning point came in 1966 when the Executive Board of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists formed an ad hoc committee to study the abortion issue and make recommendations (Aries, 2003).
