of who should be allowed to have an abortion is one of the most controversial of our time. The contention has been presented by more than one opponent to abortion rights that only rape victims should be allowed to have an abortion. The intent of this paper is to oppose that contention, to argue that it is not only ethically correct for a woman to choose to pursue an abortion but that that ethical right has been assured by law. The argument of this paper of course, is not that situation involving rape should not embrace abortion as an interventional action. Obviously, a child that is conceived during an act of rape undoubtedly would have some difficulties to overcome in life as would the woman who chose to give birth to such a child. It would be impossible to keep the circumstances of their birth from such a child. The child would doubtlessly come to consider himself or herself as the result of a violent act. In addition the family would more than likely fall into the same socioeconomic category of the mother who bore a child out of wedlock. The family would be strapped both financially and stereotypically. The chances of the mother entering into a healthy long-term relationship with a future mate would lessen even more in this instance than in the case of the promiscuous or otherwise unfortunate mother. It becomes logical to doubt that such a situation would be conducive to either emotional or physical well being for either the child or the mother of that child.
