prisons. While most imprisoned aborigines are male, many aboriginal women are imprisoned as well. Numerous attempts have been made to explain this disproportionate representation but all have been only partially successful at best. In reality, the reasons women aborigines end up in the prison system are many. Those reasons apply to both aborigine men and to aborigine women but it can be contended that aborigine women suffer the greatest from both the circumstances leading up to their imprisonment and from the imprisonment itself. The violence and lawlessness that has become so prominent in these womens lives could not only send their families spiraling into oblivion but could very possibly spell the end of aboriginal culture. Many aborigine women do not have the social skills to allow them to successfully deal with the discrimination and hatred levied their way from non-aborigines. When their husbands turn to crime these women are involved in that criminal activity as well. Often they are the targets of domestic abuse as well. When they fight back they are apprehended and punished severely by a system that sees them as misfits (Stubbs and Tolmie, 2008). When aboriginal women are imprisoned their families are left even more dysfunctional than before. Furthermore, regardless of how bad life may have been up until this point, these women find themselves in an even less amiable situation than before. The social and physical isolation that comes with incarceration is one last straw on the pile of injustices that were in place for most of these womens lives (Grossmann, 1992). As a consequence, many of these incarcerated women turn to suicide as a last resort (Grossmann, 1992). ...
