One approach is to look at both critical and horizon financial analysis. The reason investors put money into shares, or directly into a company, is in order to create value and make a profit. The use of financial analysis is based ion an assessment of the results of the firm as they are presented in the annual report. By their nature, annual reports are presenting historical data, as such any assessment needs to be considered within that context, but the use of this data when presented over a number of years may also be useful in assessing any trends or patterns. In order to assess AS Ltd, a private engineering firm, we will look at the profitability, the liquidity, the efficiency and the gearing over the years 2007 - 2009. 2. Financial Results 2.1 Profitability One of the main measures of the success of a company is the measure of profit, there are several measures, the first is the gross profit margin. The gross margin is expressed as a percentage. This is the level of revenue that remains when all of the direct costs for producing the goods or services are deducted form the revenue. This indicates the level at which direct costs account take up revenue.
