very least, debilitating. However, in recent decades, penicillin (and its cousin, streptomycin) were joined by ampicillin, flucloxacillin and methicillin (Major Classes of Antibiotics, 2010). Nor is the penicillin family the only antibiotic family - there are cephalosporins, tetracyclins, glycopeptides, quinolones and the newest antibiotics, the oxazolidones, developed to treat MRSAs in hospitals (Major Classes of Antibiotics, 2010). These latter are difficult to treat, as they are resistant to the common antibiotics on the market (Antibiotics: How They Work, 2008). The question we ask here is, if antibiotics are supposed to be so powerful against bad bacteria, why are so many in the market today? The reason is because bacteria, much like other living organisms, adapt to outwit destructive material such as antibiotics. Its safe to say that bacteria and its resistance to antibiotics is the perfect example of evolutionary theory involving survival of the fittest. To prove this hypothesis, well provide a brief overview of evolutionary theory, and then discuss how antibiotics operate to destroy bacteria. Well then provide a literature overview about bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Evolutionary Theory: An Overview Weve all had the experience where we go into the doctor with a bad sinus or bronchial infection, are given a particular antibiotic that we take and, after a few days, were feeling okay. Then, it seems, all of the sudden, the sinus infection or bronchial infection comes back, full force, almost out of nowhere, despite the fact were still popping our antibiotic pills. A return visit to the doctor leads to a stronger antibiotic - and if were fortunate, this time, the antibiotic knocks out the infection for good. ...
