Adding difficulties to the "overview concept" of Latin America are the diversity of this regions countries and nations, the varying and seemingly ever-changing forms of governments, the widely differing cultures from nation to nation and the entire regions ever-changing political systems. Yet despite these challenges, Latin America is considered a viable player in the world economy, and as globalization becomes more prevalent, so will Latin America likely grow stronger as a region of differing nations. Despite Latin Americas variances, there are, however, some identifiers and similarities that can proclaim a person, city or product as being from Latin America. What - and where - is Latin America? According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, Latin America is defined as more than a continent, although regionally it has some rather hazy borders; for example, Central and South America are a part of Latin America, as is Mexico and Cuba (Latin America, 1993). And while even part of the United States is considered part of Latin America because of its proximity to Mexico (Knapp, 2001), Latin America is officially defined as the Spanish-, Portuguese- and French-speaking countries of North America, South America, Central America and the West Indies, excluding Canada (Latin America, 1993). Latin America contains 20 republics, complete with 20 different governments including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela (Latin America, 1993). Latin America can also include - and has included in certain areas -- Puerto Rico, the French West Indies, Belize, Guyana, French Guyana, and Suriname (Latin America, 1993; see also Latin America & the Caribbean, 2001). ...
