However, as the 20th century moved along, and science and technology became such an important part along with diplomatic relations, these organizations began hosting symposiums, conferences and workshops on scientific and technology development. Part of the reason why some of these organizations have moved into this area is because technology is making the world even smaller (thanks to the Internet and other electronic means). Other reasons are because what impacts one nation from a scientific basis also impacts another. Acid rain, for example, isnt necessarily confined to the borders of one country; or is depletion of the ozone layer or concern over nuclear proliferation. In this paper, well examine some of these international organizations and associations and determine what symposiums and/or conferences they either have conducted in the recent past or will conduct in the not-so-different future. From whats being offered out there, we can then come to some conclusions as to whether such organizations are on the right track or not. In preparing this paper, were focusing more on the topic of the conference, rather than the organization itself. Science The first conference well focus on is actually a combination of science and technology. Hosted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this is entitled "Promoting the application of science and technology to meet the millennium development goals" (UNCTAD.org. 2004). This is scheduled to take place May 24-28, 2004 in Geneva, Switzerland (UNCTAD.org. 2004).
