Unemployment is high, domestic abuse is high, and there seems to be little regard for human life in the U.S. Many conservatives believe that part of the reason why the United States is in such terrible shape these days is because the morale fabric has become unraveled. Although unemployment was certainly higher during the Great Depression and although crime was rampant (especially organized crime), people stuck together. These days, that isnt happening - especially when were building neighborhoods in which houses are behind "security fences," and when were too busy to even walk our kids two blocks to school in the morning (and so end up driving them on our way to work). Politicist and writer Russell Kirk believes that standard conservatism (such as the type that was practiced right around the time the Founding Fathers drafted the constitution) is one way to save the sorry society of today (Kirk, 1953). He points out that one problem facing society is the divide between "conservative" and "liberal," with, of course, conservatism being the better of the two (Kirk, 1953). "(Conservatives) think society is a spiritual reality, possessing an eternal life but a delicate constitution: it cannot be scrapped and recast as if it were a machine," he writes (Kirk, 1953).
