It is common knowledge that the pharmaceutical salesman tries to convince the doctors that their product is worthwhile and then provides free samples. As patients get these samples, some do not realize that many of the physicians are not very knowledgeable about the new product and may simply have weak sales resistance. In some way, the industrys methods of sales and distribution is rather disturbing. Relatively recent legislation has allowed companies to advertise prescription products, something not seen in the past. This has opened the door for patients to ask for new drugs and again, critics look at a world where there is a pill for everything from the Monday morning blues to social anxiety disorder to hyperactivity. And while some think there is nothing wrong with taking pills to make the world seem like a better place, there are suspicions lurking about an industry that reports a very high profit margin. Pharmaceutical companies have been seen as evil giants that exist solely for profit and so consumers wonder if the drugs they take are really the best thing for them. When companies send representatives with free samples to physicians in an attempt to sell their products, they are selling one product only and so it would follow that better advertising techniques might cause a doctor to choose an inferior product. When it comes to soap powder or shampoo, choosing a less beneficial product due to marketing holds few consequences. But medicine is a different realm. Medical professions must live up to higher standards. Choosing the wrong drug could prove hazardous to ones health and even have deadly consequences.
