potions, magic and foolishness. Throughout this poem, which deals with one particular night of abandonment, many characters find themselves influenced by magic and loving someone they do not. By the end of the play, however, everything is put right and the relationships that were founded on reality find themselves once more. The following paper examines the types of love, and love in general, as it applies to various characters/relationships. Theseus and Hippolyta The characters of Theseus and Hippolyta are, in many ways, the foundation of the story as the play begins when they are soon to be married. The setting of the play, in this beginning, takes place during their celebrations, a festival that will last several days to celebrate their upcoming marriage. They are, in some ways, a couple whose desire to have special celebrations leads to the chaos but yet their love is primarily very realistic and very grounded, unlike the loves that will take place during the magical evening. There is some indication that Theseus, in the past, has been less than noble in his relations with women. At one point Oberon points out to Titania that she has meddled in Thesues life because she loves him and she admits that she acted in jealousy, toying with his free will it seems. But, for the most part Theseus, is a noble and heroic duke who loves Hippolyta in the real sense, in the real world, and there is no doubt that they possess the love of a married couple, the love of partnership as they look forward to their wedding. This is also seen in the character of Hippolyta, the Amazon queen, although she is not seen nearly as much as Theseus in the play. She notes, in the beginning: "Four days will quickly ...
