SA135rel.rtf A student creating a debate between three ancient persons-one a practicing Jew, another a Confucianist and a third a Braham-will want to first provide some background information on the religions themselves and then create a lively discussion. Jewish history starts during the Bronze age in the Middle East and also, a student will want to note that the birth of the Jewish people and the beginning of Judaism is explained in the first five books of the Holy Bible (Judaism 2001). Confucianism is generally characterized as a system of social and ethical philosophies as opposed to an actual religion (Berling 1982). Confucianism was built upon an ancient religious foundation in order to establish the social values, institutions, and ideals of traditional Chinese civilization (1982). Finally, as far as Brahmanism is concerned, it did exist during 500 BCE (The Classical Period 2001). A discussion might begin with a comparison of the religions: Confucianist: Our religion is a way of life for us. Jew: That is true in our religion as well. Brahman: In some way, I believe I can vouch for our religion as being a way of life, but perhaps in a different sense. For the Jew, religion is a way of life due to the allegiance to God. For Confucianists, it is more tradition. For us, it may be considered somewhat of a political arrangement that must be adhered to.
