into the ocean on Coney Islands beach. I remember that it was a sunny day and that the pull of the undertow-something I had no words for at the time-pulled me into the shallow but powerful waters. I heard my name being called faintly in the distance. "Tom. Tommy. Where are you? Are you Okay? Tommy?" Soon there were numerous voices and then I remember nothing related to the water. I opened my eyes and saw the top part of the inside of an ambulance. I knew I was in a vehicle. At four, I really did not know why I was there but I was familiar with the different types of trucks and cars. I reached for the rail handle attached to my cot and then, as I viewed my small arm, a hand reached out and touched it. I turned and caught my mothers glimpse. She was smiling slightly and whispered, probably something to the effect that everything would be okay. Everything would be okay. However, to this day, whenever the sun burns my skin, or the first nice summer day appears, the memories flood back. I really was fine. I swallowed some water. In the end, I do not know if I had been in danger, or how long they took to find me. My memory is blurred, and now at seventy, my mother does not remember everything so clearly. She does contend it was a memorable event, and that I was afraid to go back to the beach for the rest of the summer, but then she always adds: "Next summer, you didnt remember a thing!"
