However, the majority of vets will find themselves working in private practices, where they may care for common pet, farm animals and exotic animals, the job many also include advice on topics such as breeding, as well as the treatment which may require the dressing of wounds, the prescribing of drugs or possibly surgical intervention (Anonymous, 2003). Some vets also work in related areas, such as with scientists that help find causes and treat illnesses in humans by looking at animals, vets also work in public health departments as inspectors or in quarantine departments, all of which protect human health as well as shaving concern for animals (Anonymous, 2003). The practices may be private surgeries or clinics, but there are also 20,000 animal hospitals in the US (Anonymous, 2003). The condition may be partly a result of the areas that is worked in, for example a hospital may have more facilities, but also may be much noisier (Anonymous, 2003). For many vets there will be the need to work off site, especially where larger animals such as cattle or horses are concern, these conditions may be muddy and cold, and the vets may also suffer kicks, bits or other injuries inflicted by ill or scared animals (Anonymous, 2003). The hours are also long, standard hours may be in excess of fifty a week, however, there will also be on call hours where they may be called out on emergencies (Anonymous, 2003). However, there are some vets, about 20%, who work less that forty hours a week ((Anonymous, 2003). Hours are also highly likely to include nights and weekend work (Anonymous, 2003).
