One powerful theme of learning involves experience and in all honesty a person can only learn in such situations if they are open to the points of view and experiences of others. The following paper examines learning through experience with clients and integrating Christian thought into the social work in many diverse situations. Christian Thought and Social Work The social worker, first and foremost, must learn from their clients. They cannot expect to be able to help their clients if they do not listen and learn from the experiences of these individuals. For example, a social worker working with the impoverished cannot really know what it is like, if they have never been poor, unless they truly listen to their clients and attempt to learn from the clients experiences. Or for those who are oppressed because of a physical or mental handicap, a social worker must listen and learn from these people if they want to help them. This does not mean that the social worker become completely immersed in their reality, and thus give up the position wherein they are there to help, not become part of the problem This is perhaps one of the most important areas in which a Christian could bring in their faith as well as their learning abilities. The Bible teaches people that it is important, and crucial, to care for others and to never judge another individual. This is a very important foundation that could prove very beneficial to the social worker for if they rely on that foundation, that belief that they have no right to judge, then they will be in a better position to help the oppressed client. They will be in a better position to deal with any client, no matter their background, race, ethnicity, culture, ...
