As the president suggests, for America to keep pace with the needs of the workplace, people cannot afford to drop out of high school and many should pursue higher education. Adult education is something positive in todays world. Many high school graduates do not go on to higher education and sometimes this is attributed to disinterest and a desire to strike out in the world, but many times it is due to a lack of finances. Some graduates who do not have the money to attend a university full time will take classes at night and finish their degrees. Yet, there are a number of high school drop outs who do not even have diplomas and for which graduating from high school, or getting a GED, means a great deal. Adult education can help these individuals to achieve their goals. A reported 90 million (McMaster, 2000, p.64) people signed up for adult education courses in 1999, of which 23% (McMaster, 2000, p.64) enrolled in work related classes. Many people think that adult education is a new idea. Yet, adult education is something that is an old institution. The first adult education school was established in the United States in 1798 (Peers, 1998). Adult education is something that is designed for educated adults who are at least sixteen years of age and who do not have high school diplomas or basic skills (Pindus, 2007).
