Womens Work and Daytime Television Programming Research Compiled by 3/2011 Please Television has played a critical role in womens transition from the male dominated world which characterized our earlier existence and the role we hold in the world today. Television, after all, was one of the primary vehicles through which the twentieth century womens movement was perpetuated. It might be argued, however, that women were both the first "hero" of the post World War II expansion of television as a domestic medium and its first "casualty". This point is argued quite convincingly by author Lynn Spigel in the book "Make Room for TV: Television and the Family Ideal in Postwar America". The chapter titled "Womens Work" is particularly illustrative of this point. In "Womens Work" Spigel (1992, 75) observes the obvious that even "the position of the programs in the television schedule reflects and is determined by the work-structured order of the real social world". Women are the ones that are typically home during the day so the day programming is devoted to programs that reinforce the societally imposed work order. This programming intentionally reinforces women being housewives and the notion that they can do useless things like watching the daytime gibberish on television because they can simultaneously accomplish their responsibilities as housewives (Spigel, 1992)! ...
