However, while his women did represent many of the women of his time, his women also offered up women as far more powerful and intelligent than many of his time would have thought. We see many different females characters in his plays, some traditional and others outright feminists. In the following paper we examine "Winters Tale" and "Much Ado About Nothing" as they offer up female characters. The paper discusses the two plays separately and then presents a comparison and contrast of the two. Winters Tale In "Winters Tale" we see three women who play a predominant role in the play. These women are Hermione, the Queen of Sicilia, Perdita, Princess of Sicilia, and Paulina who is the wife of Antigonus as well as a lady at the Sicilian court. Each of these women play a very different role in the story as each one is incredibly different. With Hermione we have a woman who is the ideal woman in the eyes of many. She is forgiving, she is loyal, and she is incredibly obedient to her husband. This does not mean that she does not try to argue her case, claiming that she has done no wrong to her husband. But, it is to say that she is constantly doing as her husband orders, even to the point where she is executed wrongly. In the end her presence is seen as a powerful one that serves as an example of the perfect female. She has stood by her word and still loves her husband, while she resides in the form of a statue.
