want to believe that the stranger on the other end of the phone will actually make them money. Regulators are telling senior citizens to watch for " free-meal investment seminars"
and cold calls from telemarketers ("Protect Your Nest Egg From Con Artists," 2006). They further warn senior citizens against listening to and believing television and radio ads that promise good
financial investment deals ("Protect Your Nest Egg From Con Artists," 2006). Even savvy investors are sometimes duped ("Protect Your Nest Egg From Con Artists," 2006). In one instance in
Colorado and New Mexico a man by the name of Weis was involved in a Ponzi scheme where he would sell bogus investments ("Protect Your Nest Egg From Con Artists,"
2006). In his early business dealings, everything was legitimate, but then Weis started selling investments and using the money from new investors to pay the old investors dividends ("Protect Your
Nest Egg From Con Artists," 2006). One can imagine how the fraud grew. The old investors would tell their friends that Weis is legitimate because they are making money. Unbeknownst
to them the investments were not real and people lost a lot of money. What is a ponzi scheme? A ponzi scheme is something that involves the promise of high
returns when it comes to investments, and the money is changed to the older investors from the new ones ("The Top 10 Scams," 2005). A pyramid scheme is similar to
a Ponzi scheme. However, with pyramid schemes, there is usually an intricate web of people where the money rises to the top, such as in Amway or other types of
marketing programs that promise a lot of money. Pyramid schemes rely on the recruitment of new investors and the money goes up the chain. In respect to Ponzi schemes,
